Western Europe is in the grip of an extreme heat dome that has pushed temperatures into uncharted territory, testing infrastructure, public health, and emergency services across multiple countries. From the streets of Paris to Spanish plains and British coastal towns, tens of millions of people are battling oppressive conditions that climate scientists link to accelerated warming across the continent.
France Endures Historic Highs
France has borne some of the worst impacts. On Wednesday, the country’s national temperature indicator — averaging day and night readings across dozens of sites — reached 30°C, marking the hottest day since records began in 1947. Much of western France saw highs between 39°C and 43°C, with one station in the Poitou-Charentes-Val de Loire region hitting 43°C.
The extreme conditions forced early closures at two iconic Paris landmarks: the Louvre cited insufficient adaptation to climate change, while the Eiffel Tower also shut its doors ahead of schedule. More than half the country remains under a red heat alert, and tens of thousands of homes in the west lost power. Tragically, at least 40 people have drowned in heat-related incidents since Thursday, including a six-year-old child at a beach in Gironde.
Wildfires added to the strain, with over 150 firefighters battling a blaze in the Breignon forest in Maine-et-Loire. Labour Minister Jean-Pierre Farandou acknowledged the shift in national reality: France is discovering it has become a hot country that must adapt.
UK and Spain Break June Records
The heatwave spilled across borders. In the UK, Gosport in Hampshire recorded 36.1°C on Wednesday — the hottest June day in history — with forecasters warning Thursday could see temperatures climb as high as 38°C. A rare red alert remains in effect for parts of the country.
Spain experienced its highest-ever June daily average temperatures, reaching 28.17°C on Tuesday according to the national weather service. Red alerts persist in northern regions, where peaks near 42°C are possible in the Basque Country.
Warnings Ripple Across the Continent
Italy has issued 16 red alerts, concentrated in the north and centre. Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium are bracing for peak intensity later in the week, while severe heat warnings have been issued for Poland, Croatia, and Hungary as the system shifts eastward.
In the Netherlands, the KNMI issued a Code Orange alert for dangerous weather, with temperatures forecast to reach 37°C and possibly 39°C on Friday. Most of Belgium is under an orange alert with similar highs expected. German authorities are urging water conservation in several states amid drought concerns, while some cities have imposed barbecue bans. Several drownings have been reported, including a 26-year-old man in the Danube River.
Climate Context and Outlook
Europe is warming at roughly twice the global average rate, according to the Copernicus Climate Service, fueling more frequent and intense heatwaves, water stress, and wildfire risks. This latest episode underscores the growing challenge for societies across the continent.
Some relief is finally on the horizon for parts of western Europe from Friday, as temperatures are expected to ease gradually. Until then, officials continue urging caution as millions navigate the dangerous conditions.
